History of Samoyed

Samoyed Of Athabasca

"Athabasca animations" has been proposing for 2 years a discovery of samoyed fogs through sport and mountain activities.

Our animations are as various as possible and dods, but also families and kids can take part in it. You must know that Samoyed get along very well with children !

First of all, you'll find hereafter a little summary about the origine of our gorgeous white doggies !

Natives of Siberia, more precisely of Taïmyr, they were raised by the nomadic samoyed  tribes in northest Siberia, east of the Ural Mountains : it's in the north of the Artic Circle that these animals appeared and were bred as all dogs of the asian wolf.

While migrating in all directions, the samoyed people have settled with their dogs in these arctic countries for more than 10000 years.

In these days, the nomad Samoyed were a people of hunters, gatherer, like, today Lapons, Dolgans, Statans, or the more known Nenets ; they bread animals called reindeers, from which they fed ans lived.

While migrating with them, these peoles used for help and compagny dogs of differents colors, with an enormous coat ; but particulary, the dogs were able to keep reindeers, look after childern in summer, when fathers and mothers went picking.
They also were able to drag heavy  weights, hunt bears, seals and also alrus with the men of the tribes.
It was a very helpful  and essential dog in those very tough countries !

At the biginning of the 17th century, Russians were setting forth for discovering their territory and went to Siberia, discovering people and ethnies. They found out that these dogs were able do drag heavy weights.
Then, they brought back some dogs with them to make work en mines, quarries ans forests...

Like other races of dogs in other places in the world, samoyeds have thus acquired a reputation, because of their temperament, good and wilful character, but also because they are submissive, hardy and rustic.

Some Norwegian, Swedich and English explorators also used these dogs when they progressed first to the north, ans after in south Antartic, in the 19th century.
Our big doggies will therefore have their letters patent of nobility for their courage and their kindness.
At the same time, in England, Scott, a naturalistic researcher who had acquired several samoyeds, begun to raise them, because it was just a passion with him.
Nowadays, samoyeds-also-called "spitz", belong to the "primitive dog" and Nordic class. It's a race with a pedegree, that shines in canine shows, and also in harnessing and in al dog sledge racings.

That's why we want to show the descendants of those explorators dogs, through activities in the open air
